There are flamenco guitar classes and technique for whatever level you are. Simon does not give group tuition for guitarists only one to one intensive guitar study. You will cover technique and variations, as well as understanding accompaniment, but according to your level. Sometimes a singer or dancer is invited to assist. He also introduces you to the local flamenco scene, so students have fun as well. Be prepared for some late nights!
Comments about Simon el Rubio's flamenco guitar classes: I must thank you for the fine series of lessons. The advice you gave me on technique was right on the money--things I should have been told years ago, I'm sure! And my dancer already appreciates the new material por rumbas--I'm going to work on the guajiras next, and I'm greatly looking forward to it. I'm making a more flamenco sound now, at least occasionally; more evidence that there's no substitute for a one-on-one teacher. Thanks as well, maybe even more, for the fine flamenco experience the week I was in Jeréz. Meeting Gonzalo de Jerez, Joachim, "los Antonios", Rafa, the Belgians, and all the rest made for a terrific good time. The trips to Sanlúcar were unforgettable--fortunate timing that the fiesta happened while I was there! There is something to the old remark that there's more to flamenco than cante, baile, and toque. It is, after all, a way of life. It's one thing to be a spectator, to look at the life and the art from outside, and it's another thing entirely to have the opportunity to live it. I find that I've carried the attitude home with me--I'm inclined more to live my life the way I speak Spanish: ˇsolomente en el presente! An Andalucían attitude if ever there was one. I'm grateful for it all. The hospitality at casa Zolan could not have been nicer. Please do not hesitate to refer potential students or guests to me. I'll tell them why they need some time in Jerez--maybe even if they don't sing, dance, or play guitar! Richard Parker (California USA) ...Simon is also quite accomplished as a flamenco guitarist and I studied guitar with him as well. He identified the fundamental problems that have been holding back my progress as a guitarist and he helped me to better understand the basis of improvisation. Simon is an uncommonly talented teacher who is absolutely passionate about flamenco. He has much to offer students at every level. Mary Herbeck (Detroit, USA) I have been going through the material you showed me and I realize how much we covered in the short time I was in Jerez. I would like to thank you for your generosity and for your insight into Jerez and flamenco. I very much enjoyed the classes and I will get great personal satisfaction from implementing things learnt whilst under your instruction. I found your teaching style very productive. I just wish I could have stayed longer, maybe another time. Paul (Australia) |
