Did you know?the origin of the capo... Maestro Patino |
Maestro Patiño, born in Cadiz in 1829 - 1902, is credited with the invention of the cejilla or capo as a device to raise the pitch of the guitar to suit a singer. He often said that the guitar was made to accompany the song. Until the cejilla (traditionally wooden) became de rigeur, the guitarist either played "por medio" (middle strings, ie key of A [La]) or "por arriba" (open strings, ie key of E [Mi].) The flamencologist Blas Vega thought that Patiño was probably the first to modernize flamenco guitar accompaniment. He had a few disciples such as Paco el de Lucena, Antonio Perez, and Jose Capinetti who inherited his repertoire directly from El Maestro Patiño.
