Dressage refers to the training of a riding or carriage horse in order to make it respond to its rider or driver. Current methods of dressage were developed in the 18th century, from which grew the "haute école" equitation in which the horse learns intricate steps and movements. This form of equestrian art is practised by the Spanish Riding School of Vienna and the French Cavalry School in Saumur. Both horsemanship and equestrianism must be mastered before attempting a dressage competition. Equestrianism is a sport that is governed by the Federation Equestre International, founded in 1921 and encompassing show jumping and dressage.
