Alegría y Flamenco... beer and sherry...
a typical juerga flamenca in summer 2009! (flamenco party)
This one went on for over 10 hours from lunchtime to evening. Various singers typically dropped by, including gypsy Antonio Fajardo "el Momo", Antonio Hoyos, Gonzalo de Jerez, guitarists Simon el Rubio and "Seisdedos" (SixFingers) as well as aficionados and members of the flamenco club.
There was a large bowl of ajo (cold stew) of a mushy mixture of bread tomato and garlic ground into a paste with olive oil... delicious with fino sherry and a spoon... we all dig in.
the palos that were sung included Alegrias, Malagueñas, Jaberas, Fandangos personales, Buleria de Jerez, Bulerias de Cadiz, Tarantas, Tientos Tangos, Solea and numerous other styles of Fandangos. And of course some "cantes de ida y vuelta" like Colombianas which Gonzalo de Jerez is famous for. Fandangos are sung like anecdotal ballads. Short and sweet. Serious or humourous. Either personal or verses from a well known singer (such as el Gloria) or from a region or specific town (such as Fandangos de Alcala). Some are free time (though more correct to say elasticated 3/4 time structure), others more rhythmical such as the ubiquitous Fandangos de Huelva. |
